Spirit of the Flame

I heard a loud bang, and then saw tiny vibrant sparkles flickering behind the dense branches of the trees in the woods beyond the fields. They were there for an instant, and then they were gone.

It’s that time of year in the UK when the inhabitants of this wonderfully eccentric land where quirks are celebrated and the weird and crazy is welcome, go out into the dark and cold to burn things on big pyres and set off big explosions of fireworks.

There are bangs going off intermittently all around where I live tonight, but usually I can’t see even the ghostly after-smoke of the fireworks… so it was nice to catch some sparkles.

Anyway,  I have nothing to offer you tonight other than an image which came to mind as I thought of fire…

 

 

It’s not a bonfire, but this is one of my favourite photos which I took (I was moonvoodoo on deviantart until I closed my account recently) a few Winters ago of flames in the wood burner sizzling and crackling through what was left of the X-mas tree.

The wisp of smoke which looks a bit like a spirit, an angel, an elemental isn’t photoshopped… that’s why I love this photograph.

  3. Great photo! I love a good fireplace with a good fire in it. 🙂 Haven’t had one of those for a couple of years now though. My next home will for sure – my M and I are planning for it (with dogs accepted as well).
    I used to love Guy Fawkes as well, even though I understand that in the UK it has become incorrect (it has been defunct in Canada for at least 30 years now). Every kid loves a bonfire. 🙂

      I didn’t hear about Guy Fawkes having become incorrect in the UK… if it has, everyone is ignoring that it has, the UK is wonderfully rebellious.

      It’s lovely to have a fire on a cold Wintry night. Wood burners are great because they don’t need much wood to get hot and they stay hot even after the fire has gone out. I would’ve thought all residences in Canada came with fireplaces because brrrrrrrr…. :O

      • I think I read about GF not being as “correct” on Wikipedia but I just tried to find it again without success. I may possibly have been reading about the impact of Halloween on the UK. Anyway, the piece I read said that GF is anti-Catholic and therefore discriminatory and is being replaced by Halloween or so.

        But I think the tradition of a “bonfire night” is present in many cultures without the political or religious associations. It’s too bad we’ve lost it here – it’s so much fun to gather around a big fire and eat, drink and socialise. I remember really looking forward to it. 🙂

        Wood-burning fireplaces used to be really common here but insurance is a lot higher in homes that have them and gas fireplaces are seen as cleaner and therefore better. Canadians are real big into cleanliness and orderliness (much more than politeness, which is of course a big stereotype). Anyway, I can’t wait to have a home with a real fireplace again. 🙂

        • There has been grumbling about Halloween every time it comes around, but that’s mostly part of the general grumbles about the Americanisation of the UK. It’s a bit like the French getting annoyed at all the non-French words making their way into the language. We all want world peace but there are certain pieces of other world places we’re not so sure we want in our piece of the world as it upsets our personal piece of peace 😉

          It’s always a good idea to remember that people like you and me can edit the entries on Wikipedia (don’t worry, I have never done that although I was tempted to edit the Wiki page for my father, but then I thought never mind, because they had his birth data and other bio details wrong), and some people like to play pranks on Wiki, there’s been some funny ones.

          I like what they do in Iceland for central heating! The floor is almost really lava 😀
