I Have Lived Neither Intelligently Nor Wisely

Intelligence and Wisdom walked into a bar, they were seeking Knowledge, but she wasn’t there. She blew them off to go on a date with Foolishness because he was fun and life is too short to spend time with bores.

However Ego was there as usual, buying everyone drinks, up to his old tricks which entertained him so much. Soon enough Intelligence was drunk as a skunk (not that skunks actually get drunk or do they?), speaking loudly and proudly in tongues.

Wisdom cringed at Intelligence’s behaviour, and rolled his eyes as once again the same old anecdotes came tumbling out about how Intelligence had won this award, aced that test, achieved that goal, and had an IQ so high that it reached far beyond the sky.

Wisdom kept quiet, sipping his Appletini, safe in his silence, sticking to that golden rule of not saying a thing to appear far wiser than you really are. He still didn’t know who’d invented that myth but since it had spread far and wide, and everyone believed it as gospel, might as well use it to your advantage.

“When I left him, I reasoned thus with myself: I am wiser than this man, for neither of us appears to know anything great and good; but he fancies he knows something, although he knows nothing; whereas I, as I do not know anything, so I do not fancy I do. In this trifling particular, then, I appear to be wiser than he, because I do not fancy I know what I do not know.”

– Plato’s account of what Socrates said at his trial. Socrates apparently never wrote anything down, so all we know of what he said came from others.

Let’s step away from this mess in the bar, don’t worry you won’t miss anything, they do this every night, and make our way to the private lounge where our host is waiting for us. You may have a hard time finding him even thought the room is small as there is this strange cloud of smoke which surrounds him.

May I present, Lord Fandango, of the house of This That and The Other…

What? No, it’s nothing to do with Harry Potter, and… yes, that’s nice for you, I’m sure Gryffindor is happy to have you. What now? No, I’m a member of Ravenclaw. There’ll be plenty of time later to talk Potterese… NOW, is the time to talk Fandangolian!

Lord Fandango has a riddle for you, listen carefully for he will only ask it once.

Fandango’s Provocative Question #2: What do you think is more useful: intelligence or wisdom, and why do you feel that way?

You have 48 hours to come up with an answer, it can be a right answer or a wrong answer just as long as it is an answer. Yes, we have very strict rules. Should you fail to come up with an answer within the time allotted you may find yourself inside of a pickle.

Appearances to the mind are of four kinds. Things either are what they appear to be; or they neither are, nor appear to be; or they are, and do not appear to be; or they are not, and yet appear to be. Rightly to aim in all these cases is the wise man’s task.

– Epictetus

And so off they went to solve the riddle, for they had nothing better nor worse to do.

They traveled not very far, for they were lazy and this served them well.

They opened up a portal, then tapped – Intelligence versus Wisdom – into the space allocated for such scribbling things (well, if truth be recognised and told they did not have to tap the whole for the elves finished it off for them as many had used this portal and searched for such a place).

In an unblink of the eye, they were whisked to a land of wonder…

…where a descendant of Curious Soul had requested of others to fill in their blanks.

“As in,

intelligence is knowing __________ ,

but wisdom is knowing __________.

Many had been aroused by the request and come to fill in those blanks…

But none had fulfilled as much as:

Although a few came very close:

Thanks to the hard work of mentalists from the past, the seeker had found the answer to the riddle, all they needed to do now was return from whence they had come…

and so they did (yes, I could have had them lose the whereabouts of the portal, not be able to travel back to the point of origin due to the Wifithiefi, have to navigate through the Glitchmare, but… just because I could doesn’t make it so).

Lord Fandango awaited the return with slight ennuiessence caused by the discomfort of forever being surrounded in smoke (from whither does it come? Surely not from the fire within pants… and yet, mayhaps).

“This is the bitterest pain among men, to have much knowledge but no power. ”

– Herodotus

Ah, you are back, and within the time… I guess there will be no pickle with the hamburger today, Lord Fandango.

Do you have an answer for his Lordship? Shall I repeat the question just in case you’ve forgotten it:

What do you think is more useful: intelligence or wisdom, and why do you feel that way?

‘Twas a moment for trumpets and drums… and perchance a harp or lyre, those are always nice they make the air vibrate gently as though it is excited to be breathed in.

The they who had been on a quest, knelt down before Lord Fandango… although why they did that to this day no one knows and it has become a new riddle for the Riddler’s Club.

And this is the answer they gave: Neither, M’lud, for Ketchup is a smoothie.
